Russell, as Mr. Matthew Arnold, like other good men of the author's time, disliked the idea of being made the subject of a regular biography. It was written by George Edward Bateman Saintsbury, who was an English writer and critic. He began his literary career in 1875 as a critic for the Academy, and for ten years was actively engaged in journalism.
