Odile Rochefort Annesley has been in self-imposed exile in France for forty years, following a familiy tragedy. When, with her eightieth birthday approaching, she contacts her scattered grandchildren to give them details of her will, her five quite different grand-daughters see it as an excellent reason for a family get-together. Solidly-married Clemency; ambitious London property dealer, Madeleine; Parisian dress-designer, Elodie; cautious Isabelle from Quebec who has inherited the family brains; and poor, deprived misfit, Cherie, with the oddly-developing child, meet and start to get acquainted as they plan a big surprise party. Each has grown up in a different world but all share the same characteristics as families do. The nose, the determination, the loyalty, the wit. Then there's Cousin Harry, the golden architect with secret problems and a make-believe marriage which may not be all it's cracked up to be. The boys are to share the money, the girls the rest, but high-living Harry needs it all and now, which is where the trouble really begins. As the five women's lives begin to merge, each has a secret she is trying not to share...… (more)

An unexpected ending.. ( )

Quite an interesting read at the beginning but the ending was a bit of a let down. ( )

Right up to the end this was good and interesting, however, in the end there were just too many people involved to make a really compelling ending. And the secrets I hung in there so long to discover weren’t really adequately explained enough to give them punch. Needs editing and tightening to be more effective.

Book description
The austere old farmhouse looms menacingly in the French autumn dusk, surrounded by acres of vineyards. It was here that Odile, matriarch of the far-flung Annesley clan, had retreated years before in tragedy’s wake. It is here that her many descendants will gather to celebrate her eightieth birthday and hear her discuss the terms of her will. And it is here that menace and murder will slip undetected through the big house’s door.

For the five female adult grandchildren – sensible British Clemency, chic Paris designer Elodie, retiring Oxford scholar Isabelle, ambitious London property dealer Madeline, and Cherie, the illegitimate black sheep –the reunion promises good things: a reacquaintance with each other, a rapprochement with Grandmere, an occasion to grace the family albums.

But in this family bloodlines run thick – and slippery. There is cousin Harry, the gifted yet failing architect who arrives to secure his legacy by any means necessary; Odile’s mystifying silence at the news of her relatives’ pending visit; and the escalating string of violent deaths that is quietly shrinking the large Annesley dynasty. Just as ominous is the handsome, enigmatic stranger who carves a path of seduction and suspicion through the hearts of the five women.
