This "fantasy noir" novel was a pleasant afternoon; I'd even have enjoyed sequels with further adventures of our detective living on a world where both science and magic work. I don't feel the magic and science were melded that well, but they didn't detract significantly from the stories for me. Unlike Glen Cook's "Garrett, P.I." series, these stories are serious in tone, more like the books being nodded at with the titles of "The Big Spell", "The Maltese Vulcan", etc.
