The ministry makes no concessions for ministers' wives - it I assumed if their husbands are called then the wives must be too. Poppy Fraser's husband of 20 years decides to leave his fast-paced, high-paying career and answer the call from God, and Poppy doesn't seem to have a say. She is not prepared for the demands the church expect of her in the role of a minister's wife, and she doesn't get paid for her work, she isn't sure this is the life she wants. On top of this the various churches are all competing for members and Poppy is not sure she wants to play - or keep her church members under control.
look there are some good Christian theme's here - witnessing, fidelity, loyalty, explores the "why does God allow..." question. But I just show more couldn't warm to Poppy as a character at all, her constant whining and self pity really got to me after a while. To be fair she is struggling with guilt for having an affair years ago (before her husband was called to the ministry) and her daughter is a lost sheep of the first order - into premarital sex and body piercing.
To be fair - I was distracted myself when I read this - so maybe it isn't a fair review - but surely a good writer would suck me in no matter my mood? show less
