The action of Skomantas' eighth book, "The Hand of Polotsk," begins in Vilnius Castle, when the recently risen Lithuanian Duke Mindaugas, having learned that the Order of the Sword and Novgorod the Great have decided to form an alliance against Lithuania, sends Uvis to Russian lands to disrupt the negotiations that have begun.
