Description
Arrabus on the planet Wyst is an "egalistic" nation, where everyone is supposedly equal to everyone else. Arrabins work only two hours per week ("drudge"), which is drawn at random each week. In return, they receive food in the form of gruff, deedle, and wobbly-all synthetically produced food-and are housed in gigantic block tenements. Natural food ("bonter") is very rare, resulting in a flourishing black market trade with the "Weirdlands", the lands beyond Arrabus. This books is just shy of perfection. An unexpected tale, a sly satire on socialism and leftist thought in general, as well as statist control in general, the tale is marred only by the too-pat deus ex machina ending. And yet . . . I've this feeling that Vance started the book with the ending in mind! As usual with Vance, the prose is magnificent. And the character of Jantik Ravensroke is brilliantly conceived. The comedy at the start, with the Connatic (supreme ruler of that part of the galaxy) interviewing a bunch of politicians and likely criminals, is even funny.
I think this is the best of the three Alastor books. Nobody is better at writing about infuriating people than Vance (the egalistic culture on Wyst sure turns people into assholes). Good story, though the ending again feels a bit rushed. Still, very enjoyable.
A typical Vance: a charming idea, a lush setting and an impressive vocabulary, but marred somewhat by a straightforward plot, and an over-the-top mystery damsel. It seemed like Vance grew impatient after the section in Balad, because the ending feels extremely rushed.

Ondanks enkele nare trekjes van de Egalisten werkt hij naar hartenlust, maar zonder show more het te weten brengt hij enkele nietsontziende Arrabijnen met zijn tekeningen op een slecht plan, en het duurt niet lang of hij moet vluchten naar de barbaarse Griezellanden in het zuiden om het vege lijf te redden. John Holbrook Vance (August 28, 1916 - May 26, 2013) was an American mystery, fantasy and science fiction writer. Most of his work was published under the name Jack Vance. He also wrote 11 mystery novels as John Holbrook Vance and three as Ellery Queen, and once each used pseudonyms Alan Wade, Peter Held, John van See, and Jay Kavanse. Vance won show more the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1984. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame inducted him in 2001. Among his awards for particular works were: Hugo Awards, in 1963 for The Dragon Masters, in 1967 for The Last Castle, and in 2010 for his memoir This is Me, Jack Vance!; a Nebula Award in 1966, also for The Last Castle; the Jupiter Award in 1975; the World Fantasy Award in 1990 for Lyonesse: Madouc. He also won an Edgar (the mystery equivalent of the Nebula) for the best first mystery novel in 1961 for The Man in the Cage. He died at his home in Oakland, California, on May 26, 2013, aged 96.
