Description

For freelance journalist Mary McNice, life is like the froth on a cappuccino - no substance. She's tired of faking attitude for her weekly column and of trying to keep up with what's hot and what's not. Even her lover has another lover on the side. There's more to life than this, isn't there?

Mary McNice is a journalist for a newpaper in Dublin, this is a story of a day in her life. Starting with a trip to the gym, then a visit to a friend in a maternity hospital, appearance on RTE, leg wax, interview with a comic, dinner with a friend and visit to a play. Meanwhile she juggles her boyfriend (more a friend with benefits than boyfriend), friends, mother, bosses and ex-bosses.
It does try hard, and if you knew the mileu it's set in I'm sure it's hilarious but it's really not my cup of tea. A book that will find it hard to get an audience outside Ireland with it's inclusion of Irish in the text (without translation, though it may change if the book is sold outside Ireland) and it's very narrow worldview. Some of the references show more are obvious some less so, but it comes across as something written for a very specific group of people of which I'm not really one.
Not the worst book I've read but nothing I'd really enthuse about.
