I like this book because I feel like the illustrations are almost as powerful as the words in the book. This book is a great example of a diverse picture book because each chapter uses color tones to represent the woman's culture, and because this book explores 13 different stories of 13 different women, it reflects the cultural diversity of the greater world. Just a few of the different women and their impact in the world that are discussed in this book include; Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz and her story behind having the first published argument for woman's right to education in the Americas, Kate Shepphard and her story with being the reason that New Zealand became the first country to grant all women the right to vote, Mary Verghese show more and her story on founding the first functional rehabilitation center in India, and Wangari Maathai's story on being the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree and become a professor at the University of Nairobi, as well as being the first African American woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. show less
I like this book. I know some don't, but I don’t understand why. It is a primer on women around the world who have done amazing things, and helped make our world a better place. Some are artists, athletes, teachers, doctors etc. All had to overcome someone saying no. They persisted. And while some names like Malala, Rowling, and Curie, there are women who have not appeared in other books for children. Women, who even this adult reader has not heard of, but just like the kids, I want to know more about these women and the things they did for themselves and those around them.
It is the sequel to "She Persisted" about women in America. This book tells the stories of 13 women in other countries today and in the past. They were brave and helped to make the world better. Some of the women include Caroline Herschel, Marie Curie, Malala Yousafzai, and Mary Verghese. Each chapter gives a simple biography of each woman and shows how they have worked to make a difference. The chapters in this book can be read together, or separately. Each one inspires young girls and all children to make a difference and seek out ways they can help others. It teaches them to speak out and challenge barriers and injustices. It may be idealistic and could include more examples, but it succeeds in showing inspiring role models. The show more illustrations, by Alexandra Boiger, are a mix of sketches and watercolors that depict each woman doing what they love. Each chapter uses color tones to represent the woman and her culture. For example, the illustrations for J.K. Rowling are done in gray tones to portray mystery and the fog of London, while green and yellow are used to represent the trees planted by Wangari Maathai. show less
This book is very inspirational. The illustrations are beautiful. Each woman in the book is captured doing the work she is passionate about, with her country of origin painted in the background. The words are also very nice. I am familiar with She Persisted, but this was my first time seeing a collection that takes us around the world! I love the racial diversity is in this book, and the wide range of interests of the featured women. My favorite pages in this book were about Marie Curie, Wangari Maathai, and Joanne Rowling. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any of my students, and particularly to my girls!
In this companion book to 13 Women Who Changed the World, the reader is introduced to a group of incredible women who have shaped history across the world. Scientist Marie Curie and human rights' activist Malala Yousafzai are among those women, past and present, who persisted.
Thank you Chelsea Clinton for writing this book about women around the world to provide inspiration to all the young girls around the world. One of the things that I like the most about this book is that it talks about how the women had to persist to get to where they are. They did amazing things because they never gave up and worked hard. I also appreciated that less known, but very important, women were introduced in this book such as Caroline Herschel, Viola Desmond and Aisha Rateb. There is also a book called She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World that is equally as inspiring. The illustrations are beautiful and complement the women that they represent. These books are a great way to introduce the reader to several show more women while offering enough information to spark more interest. I would highly recommend that they be in every classroom! show less
She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women Who Changed History, is a great addition to Chelsea Clinton's book, She Persisted. It includes women around the world who faced adversity and didn't give up. They are truly inspirational to anyone, especially, young girls to go for their dreams. Clinton summarizes the book with these statements, "So, speak up, rise up, dream big. These women did that and more. They persisted and so should you." The story encourages readers to live their dreams by giving examples of real women who changed the world!
