This is a truly amazing series. I have a bad heart and at times during these first three books, I was a bit worried that I might end up in the hospital due to excitement and anxiety! Granted with the first book you really need to understand that the author takes a lot of artistic licenses and makes the literally impossible into the fictionally possible. But I have no problem with using my imagination! That's what fiction is for -to make us imagine ourselves in these situations and how we would react, to get us away from our everyday lives and problems, to entertain, amuse or horrify -and this series does it in spades.
In the last book, Gwen and her family and lover have finally gotten rid of her serial killer husband Melvin and thank show more goodness for that! But due to something that Sam has done, in this book, Gwen and crew decide to go help someone who calls out for help and ends up in dire straights. Sam has to confess that he has done something horrible and from there we have this next installment.
This book does end up on a different note and I find it a good one as it sets up a different sort of story for the upcoming book/s. I don't believe that Gwen and her kids have gotten rid of the trolls and stalkers, but the author is giving us something fresh.
If I had one complaint about this book is that it does too much re-hashing, but that does allow for someone to start in on this series anywhere and get caught up -tho I do not recommend that you do so.

My favorite part of this series is that it hooks the reader immediately. The third book was no different. This was dark, twisty, and at times improbable, but so engrossing. A 4 star read. And there's even a happy-ish ending. I loved the first two books in this series and could hardly wait for this one. Given the events, and the ending of book two, I wasn't sure where Caine would go and what she'd do. A quick note: this would not work well as a stand-alone. You definitely need to read this series in order. It's suspenseful and twisty and full of surprises. Can't wait for Bitter Falls in 2020!
"Monster shouldn't look normal."
This was a great addition to the series. Don't get me wrong, this book definitely sets up for the series to continue. But this is not a filler book. There is action that is a bit over the top - but I've always had a soft spot for Gwen and the kids and so I'll go on any ride with them.
But this book also shows what they've been through - as a family. We get to see Lanny and Connor really make some tough grown-up decisions - ones that they are far too young to have to face but are facing none the less.
We also learn some secrets. Not everyone has been fully upfront about what's in their past. We also see the fallout of some of the broken trust in the last story. We also get to meet some of the Lost Angels show more and see some of the first hand stalking and terrorizing that comes with this group of unhinged people. I loved how this story concluded and I'm completely on board for the new focus and twist. I'm so ready for the next one! I can't wait! show less

Gwen Proctor has been surviving for a long time now. So have her kids, Lanny and Connor. With Melvin Royal dead, they're finally starting to rebuild some sort of life for themselves with Sam Cade. Until, all at once, specters from both Gwen and Sam's pasts return. A terrifying phone call asking for Gwen's help begins an ordeal that could destroy the family they've formed.
This series is tense and well-plotted and the mysteries in this third book are no different. But it's the characterization and the deep understanding Rachel Caine brings to the characters and their circumstances that are the true stars.

The third in the trilogy (now maybe a series?) didn't disappoint. A fast paced story packed full of action, sharp writing and barbed twists make this one a can't miss!
A young girl is kidnapped, 3 young women go missing. A phone call for help from a woman in Wolfhunter River. A new documentary to discredit Gwen Proctor.
All of this begins the novel, the latest in the series about Gwen and her infamous ex-husband, serial killer Melvin Royal. Now Gwen is pulled into helping the woman who called her begging for help. What unfolds is a horrifying story of a town, evil to its core.
Gwen must come to terms with Sam and his past, knowing who to trust and who to question, while fiercely protecting her children.
I liked the dark and scary theme of this book. I thought the plot was good, but I did think it was a bit unrealistic how the shooting and imprisonments scenes played out. However, I will continue with show more the series to find out what comes next for this family.

This series is really the type that makes you sit up and take notice. These things could be happening right next door and we would never know. Classic Serial Killer stuff. I didn't think there was anywhere to go after book 2 but this book shows us just how much characters can grow if you feed them. My mind is whirling with where the next steps will lead us. Very interesting!
