Gallant Prince was a famed and loved race horse before the stable fire. Now he is fierce and withdrawn. Even as his burns begin to heal, his soul does not. And Amy does not know how to help.
Amy has never had such a difficult time reaching a horse. Since the first day Gallant Prince arrived at Heartland, he's stayed at the back of his stall, pacing anxiously. Amy knows the fear of the stable fire blazes behind Prince's threats, his bared teeth and haunted eyes. But she doesn't know how she can help a horse that has taken refuge so deep within itself. Amy can't face the fact that even she might not be able to lead Prince out of his darkness.

Amy is enlisted to help Prince, a former champion racehorse, recover from devastating burns caused by a stable fire. While Prince's physical wounds are obvious, his emotional state is more scarred and even harder to treat. When Amy learns that Prince's groom was also injured in the fire, she believes he might be the key to the horse's recovery. In the hills of Virginia, Amy works to develop an emotional connection to Gallant Prince, a racehorse that has been severely traumatized in a stable fire, while also trying to deal with her changing relationship with Ty.
