I've given this an extra half star because rancher Jason Donovan is not your usual cowboy when it comes to love. He's as tough and handsome as any romantic hero, but his vulnerability is excruciating and integral to the depth and unexpectedness of this story.
Growing up, he's maimed in a very sad way by his father's dysfunctional hatred of women. He's saved by a tolerant, long-suffering innocent, Kate, whose so natural and endearing ... and unsophisticated, as judged by some standards.
I love a good cowboy novel and this one was a fresh take, with the angst at the centre of it reminding of writers like Kent Haruf.
