This book is about a young girl named Zoe who has to flee her city because of the war happening there. She does not want to leave her place of birth, but knows that she has to. Before leaving she remembers all the good times and memories she had in the places around her. She takes out some paper and starts drawing a map of the places that made her happy. She knows that she will always have those places will be with be her, anywhere that she goes. A very inspiring and touching book. I would definitely read this to my math classroom not only to connect it to concepts such as spatial relationships and shapes, but to also for them to connect to it. Some students may not be from the United States and may have had to leave their place of "good memories" because of hardships or other circumstances. We can also use this book in Social Studies to teach about places around them (making a map). This book is also written in Spanish, which is the original publication. ( )

A young girl is forced to flee her war-torn city; but before she goes, she draws a map of the city, marks her favorite places, and reminisces about the happy memories at each location. Available in Spanish and English. Includes Author’s Note.

The illustrations are beautiful. I love how she made a map of the good times she had in her city. I would find it terrifying if I had to flee away from a place I knew best. But like the little girl it is best to remember the good not the bad.

The story follows Zoe as she flees her hometown because of war, and she makes a 'map of good memories'. I gave the book a five star rating because it was a touching story. You could definitely use this in your math class by having everyone make their own maps of good memory and practice skills like distance, measurement, and scale factor. ( )

How can a child imprint all they love in their mind, as they are fleeing from a war zone? Zoe decides to draw a map of all her favorite places. The town and all the places Zoe loves are drawn in a way that makes it seem like it could be any European city during the war. ( )
