Description

In the fourth book of the Thraxas series, Thraxas is invited to the Elvish Island of Avula. Sailing south means he can avoid the harsh Turanian winter, and escape from Makri, who's recent behavior has outraged all decent citizens. Makri refuses to be left behind, much to the displeasure of the Turanian Prince, who knows her Orcish blood isn't going to be welcome on any Elvish island. Once there, Thraxas finds himself involved in the puzzling case of the Elvish sacred tree, and Makri starts show more giving sword-fighting lessons to a very puny young Elf. As a restful holiday, Thraxas's voyage south doesn't work out as well as he hoped. There's a lot more Elvish crime than he expected, and he ends up in conflict with virtually everyone on Avula. It's well past midnight and the air in the tavern is thick with thazis smoke.
Quotations
"I don't think they have bookmakers on Avula," says Makri.
"Don't you believe it. Just because the festival features high-class tragedy doesn't mean there isn't someone running a low-class gambling operation somewhere."
"I don't trust Samantius."
"Why not? You've never heard him speak."
"He teaches for free, doesn't he? If he was any good he'd charge admission."
Makri shakes her head. "Thraxas, you take ignorance to new depths."
"You bring any thazis with you?"
"Thazis? This is the Elvish Isles. A paradise on earth and a drug-free environment."
"I know. So did you bring any?"
"What do you need it for? Can't you just enjoy the clean air?"
... (show all)"It's wonderful. So? You bring any thazis?"
"Of course. You expect me to wander about a strange island without any thazis? Hell, who knows when I might next get a beer."
"The Sorcerers' Guild owes me plenty. If I was ever to report what I know about the dubious dealings of Turai's Sorcerers to the proper authorities, half of the Guild would be in jail before sundown and the other half would b... (show all)e high-tailing it out of town. And I can feel an attack of public-spiritedness coming on."

My powers of persuasion win the day, though Lanius comments that if I ever do suffer from such an attack of public-spiritedness, I'd do well to make sure I never leave my house without my spell-protection charm.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)"I like it. But when I get back to Turai, I'm leaving this bit out of the story."
