Text and subtext

Published together with the exhibition catalogue of the same title, ‘Text & Subtext’ is a collection of essays on international Asian women’s contemporary art. The focus, as declared by the editor and curator, Binghui Huangfu, was to begin a dialogue on the issues confronting woman involved in contemporary art in Asia.This publication also seeks to introduce the conceptual thinking and conceptual work of the various geographically separated practitioners to each other. The essays presented here cover issues such as the image of woman as expressed by fashion, comparisons between contemporary art practice of men and that of women, the view of a changing diaspora art practice, and the differences of understanding inherent in the show more practice of a non-indigenous art form.

Written by noted specialists in the field of contemporary Asian art, these essays provide an insightful study and interesting perspectives on issues facing contemporary Asian female artists.
