Acts of Infidelity

Description

"Like diving into the mind of a brilliant, infuriating friend, this novel dissects the experience of "the other woman" with tremendous wit and insight. When Ester Nilsson meets the actor Olof Sten, she falls madly in love. Olof makes no secret of being married, but he and Ester nevertheless start to meet regularly and begin a strange dance of courtship. Olof insists he doesn't plan to leave his wife, but he doesn't object to this new situation either...it's far too much fun. Ester, on the show more other hand, is convinced that things might change. But as their relationship continues over repeated summers apart, and winters full of heated meetings in bars, she is forced to realize the truth: Ester Nilsson has become a mistress. Ester's and Olof's entanglements and arguments are the stuff of relationship nightmares. Cutting, often cruel, and written with piercing humor, Acts of Infidelity is clever, painful, maddening, but most of all perfectly, precisely true"-- show less

An intellectual analysis of why smart women fall for terrible men and do stupid things. Ester Nilsson's story was just a never-ending loop of destructive behavior, which stretched over 3 years and over 300 pages. For a big part of the book, I just wished for it to end faster. But I guess there is a reason for it to be so stretched, otherwise you couldn't grip the sheer size of the misery. I am happy I stuck with it until the end, though. The ending was satisfying.
I really enjoyed revisiting Sweden by book. Ester walks through big part of Stockholm and crisscrosses all through Sweden in her second-hand pea-green Renault Twingo chasing after or escorting her love interest.
Interesting story but a bit too much theoretical stuff....philosophy, high brow content
Ester fortsätter sitt ingående analyserande av en ny kärlek. Relationen beskrives träffande som insättning/uttag och överskott/underskott på ett konto. Kan väl sägas gälla de flesta mänskliga relationer mellan likvärdiga individer. Men analysen och sanningskravet drivs nästan in absurdum. Kärleken klarar inte den hårdföra behandlingen. För att använda en välkänd kliché kastar hon ut barnet med badvattnet.
