John Hendrix’s "The Faithful Spy" is a visually stunning and profoundly moving graphic novel that recounts the life and heroic efforts of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor who became a spy and ultimately a martyr during World War II. This compelling work of historical nonfiction is a testament to Bonhoeffer's unwavering faith and moral courage in the face of unimaginable evil.
Hendrix’s artwork is nothing short of breathtaking. His use of vibrant colors, dynamic layouts, and expressive typography not only captivates the eye but also deepens the emotional impact of Bonhoeffer's story. The illustrations are meticulously detailed, immersing readers in the historical context of Nazi Germany while vividly conveying the tension and show more danger of Bonhoeffer's clandestine activities. The visual storytelling is so powerful that even readers less familiar with graphic novels will find themselves drawn into the narrative.
The narrative itself is skillfully crafted, blending historical fact with personal insight to present a well-rounded and deeply human portrait of Bonhoeffer. Hendrix does an exceptional job of highlighting the internal and external conflicts Bonhoeffer faced, from his theological struggles to his involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler. The pacing is excellent, ensuring that each chapter builds upon the last, leading to a climax that is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Hendrix’s thorough understanding of the historical context and his attention to factual accuracy lend the story a significant degree of authenticity. The inclusion of quotes from Bonhoeffer’s writings and speeches further enriches the text, providing readers with a direct connection to his thoughts and philosophies.
Overall, "The Faithful Spy" is an exceptional graphic novel that succeeds on multiple levels. It is an educational resource, a visually stunning work of art, and a poignant narrative that resonates with readers of all ages. This book was an ALA YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist in 2019. The book is a hybrid between traditional YA nonfiction and that of a graphic novel. The author is a well known graphic novel artist and designer. Some of the pages are laid out in the traditional framed graphic novel format and some of the pages are full page graphic novel spreads, while others are laid out in text rich pages accompanied by illustrations. Direct quotes from Bonhoeffer and his associates are scattered throughout the book and are indicated by asterisks. The coloration is blue, red, and black, all in modern shades of those colors.
The book succeeds on many levels. The author has managed to distill the writings, beliefs, and historical facts of show more Bonhoeffer's life down to their simplest essence that makes it understandable for young readers. This also simplifies the underlying philosophy. None of this downplays the importance of that philosophy or comes across as condescending to the reader - probably to every reader no matter their age. Bonhoeffer's life is full of philosophical struggle and this book brings that struggle to life. It also provides the background for much of what has developed into the theology of action that is followed by the current Pope and many religious leaders in the developing world. The illustrations are dynamic, intensely emotional, and sometimes shocking and serve the story and that period of history very well. This would be an excellent book for use in Middle School discussion groups. Well, for any book discussion group, for that matter. I can't say enough good things about this book. The quality of this book was certainly a surprise to me, and it is a book that will stay with me for some time. It made an impact and an author can't hope for more than that. show less

A graphic novel that explains the life of Bonhoeffer for those aged 10-13. As an educator, I believe this work would be too difficult for most of that age. Of course, the graphics distracted me. It made clear Bonhoeffer's dilemma: should a man dedicated to God become involved in actively opposing the government, even if that government is unjust? I think this book would appeal to a young reader who already has a good grasp of WWII and an interest. 176 pages
I really thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel. I learned a lot about the Nazis and Hitler's rise to power. It's hard to put this book down. Anyone who enjoys history will soak up this book.
Growing up in 1920s Germany, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was enthralled with theology and ultimately became a pastor. His country was demoralized after the harsh sanctions of the Treaty of Versailles ending World War I and was ripe for a savior, someone who would restore the glory of Germany, in the form of Adolf Hitler. As the atrocities mounted during Hitler's ascendancy and reign, Bonhoeffer was conflicted. On the one hand, his fierce beliefs forbade murder. On the other hand, Bonhoeffer believed that Germany's salvation lay in ridding it of this dictator. How can his belief in aiding others be aligned with his assisting in plots to kill Hitler?
His illustrations are also 'art' vs fact. His depictions of Adolf Hitler and Dietrich Bonhoeffer show more differ dramatically from their likenesses.
John Hendrix, the author/illustrator, states in the Research and Authenticity section "This story is not primarily a work of scholarship but a work of art...My goal was never encyclopedic detail, but underlining the essential themes..." As such, opinionated sentences such as "Hitler was delighted. This crack in Germany's economic foundation was just big enough to let his rats into the cellar" appear multiple times throughout the book. He puts words in the mouths of his characters.
Hendrix provides a synopsis of Bonhoeffer's life and beliefs juxtaposed with the economic and moral climate of Germany from the first through the second world wars. The combination of easy prose, drawings, comic book type illustrations and side notes make for a fast read. Hendrix succeeds in setting the tone of the times. However, this is not an exhaustive, authoritative biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but rather an opinionated overview of a life and times. A Selected Bibliography, Notes and an Index assist readers.
It's hard to take this flawed book seriously. show less

John Hendrix brings Dietrich Bonhoeffer into the spotlight and the complexities of dissenting to a powerful, tyranical regime. Bonhoeffer was a German pastor who was incontent with how the German people, particularly the church, were aiding and abeting a series of laws that dehumanized Jews and other German people on the fringes of society. While preaching, he was presented with a role in a plot to kill Hitler. The graphic novel goes through his philisophical writings on ethics, religion, civil disobedience, and the ill fated plot.
What I liked:
The question many of students ask when discussing the Holocaust was "Why didn't the German people stop the Nazi's?". This book takes an honest look at the behaviors that German people permitted show more that led to the escalation of treatment against Hitler's "Undesirables". Going further, it goes into detail how difficult resistance was, even if you were a part of the preferred demographic in the Third Reich.
What I Missed:
The art style refects the severity and duality of choices that had to be made by Bonhoeffer- sharp lines, use of blue, black, and red- however, there needed to be a larger variety of intensity and softness to match the tone of some beats of the story- such as his formative years and the small moments of hope while creating the plan. I also would have liked the graphic novel more if it was condensed and editing about 10 percent more- or find a way to integrate his philosophy into the artwork, rather than just text on the page. show less

This is sort of a "graphic novel," except it's a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor who got involved with a plot to kill Hitler during WWII. It was well done, using actual quotes from his writings as well as explanatory narrative and illustrations. I had heard of Bonhoeffer but had never read much about him. I recommend this book for maybe 12+. The only complaint I had was that the print is very small.
