Description

Welcome to Nowhere, Arizona, the least livable town in the United States. For Gus, a bright 13-year-old with dreams of getting out and going to college, life there is made even worse by Bo Taylor, Nowhere's biggest, baddest bully. When Bo tries to force Gus to eat a dangerously spiny cactus, Rossi Scott, one of the best racers in Nowhere, comes to his rescue--but in return she has to give Bo her prized dirt bike. Determined to buy it back, Gus agrees to go searching for gold in Dead show more Frenchman Mine, joined by his old friends Jessie Navarro and Matthew Dufort, and Rossi herself. As they hunt for treasure, narrowly surviving everything from cave-ins to mountain lions, they bond over shared stories of how hard life in Nowhere is--and they realize this adventure just may be their way out.-- show less

The action scenes in this really hold you in their grip, with some legitimately dangerous situations, it’s a great pick if you’re wanting a strong sense of adventure in your summer reading.

I was impressed by how seamlessly this toggled between high adrenaline moments, bits of humor that felt true to the kids’ ages, and quieter, vulnerable conversations that never crossed the line into sappy.

Rossi was probably my favorite character, she’s an ace dirt bike rider and quite often the one the boys look to for solutions, but I enjoyed all four of these kids, none of them fit into a stereotypical box, and you see growth for each over the course of the story.

There are realistic moments here but at the same time this isn’t married to show more realism, that might not work for every reader, to me though, the occasional quirk in tone very much suited the characters and their small town. show less

I'm doing a challenge to read a book set in every state and picked this for Arizona. I don't mind books geared towards younger readers if they are done well, and this one was. It was funny without trying too hard which has a been a big fail in the adult books I've read recently. It was full of adventure, and I liked that each chapter represented an hour of time. It had some nice life lessons tucked inside without be preachy.
Lots of 5 star reviews for this one & thats for a good reason. This is a superb middle grade adventure. Gus finds himself being bulled by town rough neck Bo once again, but this time his friend Rossi comes to his aid but it costs her her dirtbike. Gus is determined to "pay back" Rossi & get her bike back but he's going to have to bring some gold out of the old (& collapsing) gold mine. The book had me on the edge of my seat not sure how the protaganists were going to get out of scrape after scrape.
Gus and four others are bullied into going in an old cave to find a lost treasure. When a landfall happens and they are trapped the four of them bond together to try and escape.
Yeah, no, not for me. Opening with the extreme bully, and the extreme grandma, it's just too much for this jaded adult. January 2022.
