The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: An Oral History

Description

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman reveal the full story behind their epic romance—presented in a series of intimate conversations between the couple.
The year: 2000. The setting: Los Angeles. A gorgeous virtuoso of an actress agreed to star in a random play, and a basement-dwelling scenic carpenter said he would assay a supporting role in the selfsame pageant. At the first rehearsal she surveyed her fellow cast members, determining if any of the men might qualify to provide her with a show more satisfying fling. Her gaze fell upon the carpenter, and like a bolt of lightning the thought struck her: no dice. Moving on.
Yet, unbeknownst to our protagonists, Cupid had merely set down his bow and picked up a rocket launcher . . . that fired a love rocket (not a euphemism). The players were Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, and the resulting romance, once ignited, was . . . epic. Beyond epic. It resulted in a coupling that has endured to this day; a sizzling, perpetual tryst that has captivated the world with its kindness, athleticism, astonishingly low-brow humor, and true (fire emoji) passion.
How did they do it? They came from completely different families, ignored a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.
Eighteen years later, they're still very much in love and have finally decided to reveal the philosophical mountains they have conquered, the lessons they've learned, and the myriad jigsaw puzzles they've completed. Presented as an oral history in a series of conversations between the couple, the book features anecdotes, hijinks, photos, and a veritable grab bag of tomfoolery. This is not only the intoxicating book that Mullally's and Offerman's fans have been waiting for, it might just hold the solution to the greatest threat facing our modern world: the single life.

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally talk about Megan's life mostly, as he already covered his in Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man's Fundamentals for Delicious Living, and share details about their long relationship and thoughts on many random topics. They made for pleasant company on a pair of road trips I took to see my daughter at Thanksgiving and to pick her up for a Christmas visit.

Listening to this audiobook is like listening to a podcast rather than a traditional narration. And yet it leaves me with the impression that much of the book must have been recorded, transcribed and edited, and then Offerman and Mullally treated the result as a script to be reenacted instead of just read aloud. This is made more obvious by the more show more free-wheeling and unpolished bonus chapter of the audiobook about the couple's likes and dislikes that sounds like it was recorded on the fly in the studio.

Another bonus of the audiobook is an extensive description of the photo section of the print book. I recommend picking up the paper version see those photographs as well as the many more pictures and illustrations the audiobook cannot include. And if you have only read the print edition, you might want to pick up the audiobook to get all the extras there.

I wanted to give this more stars, but I wasn't the hugest fan of the book. It was very conversational and jumped around a lot. There was a lot of interrupting, boner talk, and reminiscing. It was like a casual conversation. I'm sure the audio is drastically different from the print book in that there is a lot of spontaneous talk that you can tell was not included in print. On the upside we got some music and a bonus chapter, on the downside we missed out on all the cool pictures. It was neat hearing all about Nick and Megan's relationship, this just felt like more of a podcast then a book. Still fun though and it is awesome that it is narrated by the two of them. I will also say that this is far more than just their love story, it's show more part memoir about childhood, acting, family dynamics and other tidbits. They get their romance out of the way in the first third of the book. show less
Confession time: I don't watch, and have never watched, Will & Grace or Parks and Rec. I'm not sure why, exactly, because I thought I liked Megan Mullally and I DO enjoy Amy Poehler. Anyway, I thought I'd give this audio book a go and it ended up being just okay.

Someone who watches these shows or has a real fangirl thing going on for Nick Offerman and/or Megan M. might get more out of this book than I did. Megan and Nick talk about their pasts, how they met, their careers, how they manage to keep things fresh, and how they like to do jigsaw puzzles and listen to audiobooks while they do so.

To be honest, this book reminded me why I don't read romances and why I love horror. These two are cute, but after only a little while, they became show more too cute for me and I would have loved to see them, (or in this case, hear them), die horrible and painful deaths. Well, not really, but they were just too....sappy. I don't like sappy.

So there you have it. I thought this book was okay, but if you're a big Megan Mullally or Nick Offerman fan you're likely to get a lot more out of this too cute, sickeningly sweet book.

Thank you to my awesome public library for the free loan of this audiobook. Libraries RULE!

I will admit this felt less like a book and more like...what? Like I was a fly on the wall listening Megan and Nick chat back and forth about their lives.
Regardless, these two stars are so personable, and their insanely obvious chemistry is what makes it all work. They feed off each other, and banter back and forth in a way that is both endearing and funny.
This certainly wasn't the most hilarious thing I've ever read, and given the author's I was a bit shocked at that. However, it was a really fun read that went rather quickly.
I found their back and forth refreshing for a narrative and unique.
If you want a fun, lighthearted read and a glimpse into the lives of this couple, this is the book for you!

Absolutely loved this book! This is the funniest book I've read this year! The banter between Megan and Nick are hilarious as well as very sweet. You find out a lot about both of their past, families, religion, etc. The pictures are so funny and the nostalgic photos are cute. All in all a very good read. I actually read it in one day. Highly recommended.
I am familiar with Megan from W&G. I never watched Parks and Rec, but I've seen the memes that are Ron Swanson. So I was delighted to listen to these two magical people talk about their incredible relationship. I listened to the entire book on a road trip home from a great weekend, and their laughter and joy made weekend traffic much easier to bear. Also, I have a crush on Nick now due to his giggle. It's infectious. I may have to read more of his solo work now.
A laid-back audiobook that's pleasantly amusing to listen to. The only section I found boring was when they described the section of pictures in the print book, so I skipped some of that, but otherwise they cover their childhoods, families, early experience in the theater world, and TV/film experience (mostly Will & Grace and Parks & Rec, though there was relatively little on Parks & Rec). They also talk about their dogs.
