The rating that shocked absolutely no one.
I just loved it? When I first heard about it I was a bit like "obviously I'll buy it and read, but what are they even gonna write about that'll be interesting? A dual memoir just sounds like a weird way to cash in". And maybe it is, a little bit.
But fuck it, it's also great. I love how it just goes all over the place, I love that it has lists (gods, I used to write so many random lists, why don't I do that anymore?), I love how Karen and George tie their thoughts and lives together to the themes. Does it always work 100%? No, but that's not the point.
It's a memoir, it's an advice book, it's something else entirely. It is exactly what I needed

I had different expectations as to what this book would be. I was lead to believe it'd be a more involved version of their podcast, but this book was not that.
That is not to say I didn't enjoy it. I'm not an avid fan of the podcast only because I enjoy more factual evidence and case background. Karen and Georgia are a little "too fun" (I know, what?!) for my tastes when it comes to true crime.
With all of that being said, I did enjoy this book and I know fans of the podcast will be so happy with this book as it gives a lot of background on the authors and funny accounts from their youth.
I ended up listening to the Audible version and really enjoyed it. I haven't read the hard copy but I have to say, the audiobook was worth it. Hearing show more them narrate, I feel like a lot would be lost on the page. PLUS, PAUL GIAMATTI!!!
All in all, I enjoyed it and would 100% recommend to already fans of My Favorite Murder. show less

Is this a memoir? Is it humor? Is it a self-help book? Is it a feminist manifesto? Is is it a guide to staying sexy and not getting murdered? Well, yes, it's all of those things. But what it really is is a pep-talk from your two best friends who have *been there* (like really BEEN THERE) and are here to show you their scars and share the lessons they've learned and tell you if they can do it, goddammit, you can too. As an avid listener of Karen & Georgia's podcast I have been impatiently waiting to get my hands on this duel memoir for months - and it did not disappoint. (Note: you do NOT need to be a listener to enjoy this book!)
This book is like a bad accident, it’s terrible but you can’t look away (and I say this in the best way possible). I feel like I may have a love hate relationship with these women, or their podcast, or this book, or whatever. Their voices (is this a California thing) are slightly offensive to the ears but I am fascinated with what they say. And what they say is just asinine. I love their brutal honesty. I take sick pleasure in their clear ignorance yet relish in the fact that despite themselves they’ve found their place in life (each other, happiness, success).
If you like the podcast you’ll probably like this book BUT know that this book is not like the podcast at all; it is like a self help book in the form of don’t do as I show more did (and I love me some self help books). There are references to murders but those take a backseat to their word vomit commentary.
I’m reading this for bookclub right at the beginning of the new year and feel like the timing is perfect. Having been the one to suggest this book I can’t wait to hear other’s takes on it. show less

The creators and hosts of the "My Favorite Murders" true crime podcast discuss how they met and started the podcast, and through interchanging chapters they pretty much write their autobiographies. The chapter by Karen of what it was like to be a latchkey kid in the 80's is hilarious. The majority of the book is about their emotional problems and substance abuse and what they've learned through years of therapy. They do go into their problems at length, with Georgia even providing direct quotes from her therapy sessions and providing a list of her diagnosed issues.
This is a lot of self help for a reader who thought that the book would be about putting together a true crime podcast. Not sorry I read it because it was entertaining, show more informative and sometimes funny, just a completely difference book from what I was expecting. show less

So, if you know Georgia and Karen you will expect the awesome humor in this book. I was not expecting "the feels" so much, but I should have. I should have because Karen & Georgia are nothing if not honest realness. I loved this book, I loved laughing out loud while reading it on the trolley ride home, I loved tearing up when I could relate and feel their feelings as they shared them with us. I'm sad it is over and will probably read it again sooner rather than later. SSDGM
Freaking Georgia and Karen. Can I please be friends with you?
I picked up this book without knowing there was an accompanying podcast, and I only picked it up because it had “murder” and “sexy” in the same title. Little did I know what I was getting myself into!
If you love caustic and ruthless humor, if you love having a dialogue with a book, if you love swearing, then fucking hooray. This book is exactly what you need in your life.
