I love gardening and I love children's picture books, so this book was a lovely, little read.
Gardening is hard work, and this book let's you know how our lead family became gardeners! They started small and worked their way up to a more difficult garden. Failure was welcome because you learn from each step! They learned that some plants only like to sip water, not devour it. The ferns did well, but some other plants were much more difficult and required specialized attention!
The colour palette is soft and delightful, plus the pictures are also super cute. They fit the story well and make it feel very homey.
Overall, this book is great! I'd highly recommend young readers to pick this book up!
Four out of five stars.
Thank you to show more NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for allowing me a copy of this book to read in exchange of an honest review. show less

"We are the Gardeners" provides a fine family story along with gardening advice. The story relates how a family journeys from growing one small potted fern to raising a large garden. The book features colorful drawings that illustrate the gardening journey. With the story come great tips on how to start a garden, problems that can be encountered, what it takes to have a successful garden, and the lessons to be learned from gardening.
Families with kids will enjoy reading this book together and planning their own gardens. Even small children can look at the pictures and tell the story, which makes it a great teaching tool as well as a good story.

The large family certainly appreciates not only healthful fresh foods, but all the life lessons like patience and persistence. Their harvest meals are certainly celebratory, even if it's just the five kids and the two parents. It reads like a memoir, but was Dewey 635 (horticulture) in my library, which makes sense to me because there is enough information included to get a reader's family started on a garden of their own.
I'm a bit not thrilled that there are so many kids, and now that I've learned that the author is a 'celebrity' I'm bemused. I dunno. Good enough book if your library has it.

We Are the Gardeners is a book that follows the adventures of the Gaines family as they try to become successful gardeners. The reader gets to go along with them on the journey that teaches them that great things are worth all of the hard work. After hours of outdoor labor, and dealing with bunnies that want to eat everything they see, they finally find themselves doing what they set out to do. This teaches young readers the great lesson that trying something new isn't always easy but the reward is going to be worth all the hardships. Overall, this is an entertaining story great for young students.
While this story is precious and a great true story about how to garden and keep your garden safe, it is lengthy for little's attention. It is beautifully written and full of personification.
This book is very long. It is the story of the Gaines kids’ trials and tribulations in building a garden. The lesson is never give up and to try new things. Just because you failed once doesn’t mean you will only fail. You only fail if you don’t try. The book is fine. There’s nothing wrong with it. The illustrations are also fine. But it’s not one I think would get checked out frequently, especially by people who don’t recognize the name.
