29. The Heiress of Edgremont by Mrs. Harriet Lewis (read in 1939) I read this book in third or fourth grade, and it has lived in my memory since. I think it was inspired by Jane Eyre, but I read it before I read Jane Eyre. Mrs. Lewis wrote quite a number of books, most of them not published till after she died.
