Description
"It is two hundred years since the deity known as the Absolved went mad and destroyed the Kingdom of Alnachim, transforming it into the Execration, a blasted wasteland filled with nameless terrors. For decades, desperate souls have made pilgrimage to the centre of this cursed land to seek the Mad God's favour, their fate always unknown. Now a veteran warrior known only as Pilgrim, armed with a fabled blade inhabited by the soul of a taunting demon, must join with six others to make the last show more journey to the heart of the Execration. Allied with a youthful priest, a beast-charmer, a duplicitous scholar, an effete actor and two exiled lovers, Pilgrim must survive madness, malevolent spirits, unnatural monsters and the ever-present risk of treachery, all so that the Mad God might hear his prayer and, perhaps, grant redemption. But can sins such as his ever be forgiven?"--Provided by publisher. show lessTags

I didn't know great epic fantasy could come in such small packages! Ryan has created a fully-realized world, interesting characters, and a grand quest all in fewer pages than many writers can even get a character out of their front door. I am eagerly awaiting the next entry in the series.

A short but engaging fantasy quest novel. The man who calls himself only 'Pilgrim' travels to the edge of a wasteland to go on a quest with other travelers to beseech a miracle from the Mad God. Everyone on the quest has a history, not all are what they seem. Well done, but clearly meant to be part of a series as we only learn a little about Pilgrim and Seeker.
It was full of action and although it was rather short, around 120 pages, it was very interesting. There also was a certain mystery about a lot of the characters which compelled me to keep reading. I already look forward to reading the rest of the series because this is an amazing start.
A fun, quick read. Not a lot of depth, but a well executed short story that was entertaining from the opening paragraph to the closing. I'm so used to reading Ryan's incredibly constructed worlds and characters so it threw me off a bit to read a short, but I'd still recommend giving it a go!
A very engrossing novella. I hope to read more from Ryan about this world, full of demons, decaying religions, and impossible landscapes.
