"In the start of an all-new mystery series set in pre-World War II Europe, an intrepid young photographer carries her imperiled lover's final, urgent message into the heart of Berlin as Hitler ascends to power. On vacation from London on the beautiful Italian coast, twenty-eight-year-old Elena Standish and her older sister Margot have finally been able to forget some of the lasting trauma of the Great War. Touring with her camera in hand, Elena has found new inspiration in the striking Italian landscape, and she's met an equally striking man named Ian. Not ready to part from one another, she and Ian share a train trip home to England. But a shocking murder disrupts their agenda, forcing Elena to personally deliver a message to Berlin that could change the fate of Europe. Back home, Elena's diplomat father and secretive grandfather--the former head of MI6, unbeknownst to his family--are involved in their own international machinations. Working behind the scenes as Elena tries to complete her mission on the ground, they interfere with a crucial political rally for one of Germany's most outspoken fascists. With Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich on the rise, and Elena caught in the middle of an international incident, anyone she encounters might be part of a deadly plot. In the first novel of a riveting new series by bestselling author Anne Perry, family secrets merge with suspense on the world stage, and Elena learns that, in these complicated times, no one can be trusted, and she must learn to rely only on herself"--… (more)

Nazis and everything horrible that comes with them, spies, a manhunt, murder and betrayal… this story has it all! AND, it’s a very good read!

The characters are well developed. The reader is given villains and heroes, and the distinctions are not always obvious.

I enjoyed everything about this book! ( )

Author Anne Perry's Elena Standish mystery series is her newest and is a spectacular addition to her collective works. This first book in series is exciting, clever, very well written and it deftly weaves multiple story lines which converge into a thrilling climax. Her scene descriptions are painterly and provide equally a glimpse into the subtle nuances of human interaction through the personalities of her well-conceived characters. Perry is truly masterful.

This book, set in 1933, introduces us to our protagonist, Elena Standish, a young British woman, formerly of the Foreign office. Being a gifted and talented photographer, she's subsequently hired to photograph the attendees and proceedings of an economic conference in Amalfi. She meets and quickly develops a close rapport with Ian, a presumed economic journalist at the conference. He is suddenly called to Berlin on urgent business and asks Elena, won't she please accompany him, at least as far as Paris. She agrees and off they go. Partway to Paris, his absence from their train cabin is too long for comfort. Elena goes in search of Ian only to find him in his final moments before death. He whispers to her what information needs to be delivered to the British Embassy in Berlin. She assumes the duty and her adventure commences.

This was a great introduction to the series and I am eager to continue on with the remaining four installments.

We found some problems with the flow of this book. Times when we were jerked out of the story by some odd happening or overlooked solution. There were rather too many deus ex machina for my taste. A good number of twists and turns. Good characters, some very surprising moments. This has more the feeling of a spy story and not so much of the mystery that I was hoping for, so that has colored my review. I'm not sure I will look for more of this series. ( )

While in Amalfi photographing an economics conference, Elena is nearby when a body falls from a linen closet. She is sure her companion, Ian, recognized the body, but he says he does not. When they depart together for France, Ian is killed on the train and Elena finds herself in the middle of an espionage plot.
This book started off much like a mystery novel but is much more aligned with a spy thriller. ( )
