When Jung Byson tells her the cops dropped the case of his friend, Tim Ayers' murder too soon she listens. At first she thinks Jung is spinning his wheels out of grief but soon she has questions of her own. She needs to handle the investigation without stepping on her former colleagues' toes. But between the cops stubbornness, and the gut feelings she gets from other people of interest Raines' professional courtesy is short-lived. She goes full-hog, gets threatened, beaten, receives a horrendous delivery confirming she is on the right show more track and some folks will do anything to get her off.

Exciting, energetic, fast-paced. Quick, fun read.

Cass is approached by Jung, the delivery guy for her favourite diner. Jung's friend Tim has died by falling from his yacht and drowning. The police suspect it was suicide, but the family are powerful in the community, so they go with accidental death to spare their feelings. Jung however is convinced it is murder. Despite the fact that it turns out later that Jung is independently wealthy, Cass charges him $100 (most of which she immediately uses on bribes) and then spends the next week or so repeatedly risking her life and freedom getting to the bottom of things. It began to feel a little bit pathological, although I think we are meant to see that she is exorcising demons from what happened in Book 1 (which I haven't read). I also felt show more we never really got a sense of what Tim was like - so many lies were told about him and his character remained murky to me.

This was another page turner and I enjoy the dry humour and Cass' eclectic group of friends. I recommend this series.
