Description

"In the summer of 1915, the sudden death of a young girl brings grief and notoriety to Charleston Farmhouse on the Sussex Downs. Years later, Josephine Tey returns to the same house--now much changed--and remembers the two women with whom she once lodged as a young teacher during the Great War. As past and present collide, with murders decades apart, Josephine is forced to face the possibility that the scandal which threatened to destroy those women's lives hid a much darker secret."--Amazon.

raizel The author herself recommends it in her acknowledgments. I do as well.

Josephine Tey is forced to revisit a death in 1915 at an agricultural school where she once worked. At the times ruled an accidental death, accusations of murder are being made in 1948. Well plotted, although a read that demands attention. Good characterization.
An article about an actress about to star in a production of Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour prompts Josephine to revisit the 1915 death of a student at a horticultural college for women where Josephine had been a teacher and met her first love during World War I. I think there may be hints of Miss Pym Disposes; the author "pays tribute" in this book to The Franchise Affair. Real life characters like Duncan Grant of the Bloomsbury group and Alfred Hitchcock's wife make guest appearances.
