A man dying of cancer goes to visit an old flame and finds her bewitched by a piece of art she is creating, haunted by strange dreams. He hopes that by unlocking the dreams he can free her from her obsession, but when the outside world invades everything comes apart. It's a novel which really shouldn't work but does and it wraps up with a poignant ending that skilfully sidesteps that which appears inevitable.
