Not perfect but fun! Garfield Logan wants to fit in with the popular kids and bulk up. He's tired of being scrawny and not noticeable. I liked his character here, and I LOVED Gabriel Picolo's artwork! The style fits perfectly, and everything has this green, murky overlay that works well.
Also, I really enjoyed his two friends, Stella and Tanaka. They were cool and cared about him. Even though this is the usual "teen wants to be popular" story, Gar was self-aware ( i.e he knew those teens didn't care about him frfr. this book gets a plus for not having him turn his back on his friends )and his friends acknowledged that they understood the allure of wanting to be popular. They made good stand-ins for his friends though Stella is pretty show more dumb for turning down free money, ijs.
The pacing is okay but lends too much time to unimportant things. Tanaka's storyline never really finishes, what happened to Gar's bully/antagonist?, and how can Gar just leave with no repercussions whenever he wants?
Still, I'm excited to read "Beastboy Loves Raven," but I suspect it may suffer from the same pacing issues. Oh well!

Teen Titans: Beast Boy is about the story of Garfield Logan, aka Gar, aka Beast Boy. He's at the beginning of Senior Year and wants nothing more than to get muscles and be noticed by The Chosen Ones - his high school's elite populars. His best friends, Stella and Tank, don't understand his need to be noticed. When Gar accepts a crazy challenge in the hopes of getting noticed, his best friends help him out. Other things are changing too, Gar basically becomes everything he wants overnight, but it comes at a cost. Realizing the extent of his changes, Gar has to face the truth about himself and figure out what really matters.
I am not really one for DC, yet alone Teen Titans, but my boyfriend enjoys them so I do know a bit about this show more series. I read Raven when it first came out and I absolutely loved the artistic style and the story, so I was excited to read about Beast Boy as well.
It didn't disappoint me one bit. It gave us a bit more on his backstory (and why he's always the comic relief in a lot of stuff). It did feel like the conflict in the story wasn't really resolved much. Some characters were major points here and there and then gone again or put in the background the next moment. I kind of wish there was more interaction with some of the side characters, but other than that, I enjoyed the novel and read through it in one day.
Gabriel Picolo's art is beautiful and amazing and I loved it in Raven and I love it again in Beast Boy. The color schemes work, making this pop when they need to pop and blend when they need to blend. I can't enjoy it enough! show less

I am confident that this entire graphic novel series is going to be fantastic! I loved reading Teen Titans: Raven and the Beast Boy rendition is just as good, with appealing coloring and style.

Reading Marvel/superhero comics is hard for me since the pages are packed with text and details and the story is hard to follow. This graphic novel style has none of those problems and tells the story in a clear, linear way. Given my lack of expertise with the Teen Titan franchise, I'm not sure how much of this fits into canon, but I'd choose this medium over the TV series.

Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo’s Teen Titans: Beast Boy continues their retelling of the Titans’ origins following their previous book, Raven, to explore Garfield Logan. They set his story during contemporary times, showing how he struggles with body image issues and desires to be popular, even though it means the possibility of isolating his friends. He also finds out that there may be more to his parents’ research and the supplements they have him take following a childhood injury. Like in Raven, this story continues Garcia and Picolo’s use Slade Wilson as a mysterious figure tracking super-powered youth on behalf of H.I.V.E. Garcia does a wonderful job updating the setting of these characters while Picolo’s art continues to show more beautifully capture characters’ distinctive likenesses. Colorist David Calderon uses a subdued palatte to great effect, so that splashes of color take on added emotional and thematic meaning. Teen Titans: Beast Boy is a great reintroduction to the character and works nicely to set up this retelling of the Titans’ origins. show less
Garfield Logan can't seem to do anything to get taller or gain weight, and he has tried everything from protein shakes to lifting weights. He feels like he doesn't fit in with the cool kids, and spends all his time hanging out with his friends, Stella and Tank. After researching the supplements his parents have been having him take, he thinks they may be keeping him from growing, but when he stops taking them, he begins to experience strange side effects.
Beast Boy tells the origin story in a way that kids, especially those that don't fit in can appreciate. Gar is funny and loyal, giving him good friends that really care about him. The artwork fits with the character and the story being told as does the dialogue. Overall, another good show more Teen Titan story by Kami Garcia. show less

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher (DC Comics) in exchange for an honest review.
I’m not super familiar with the Teen Titans so going in I knew very little about Beast Boy. Because of this, I didn’t have any particular expectations going into it. I ended up enjoying learning the origin story of Beast Boy.
As a whole, the plot is fairly basic. There really isn’t anything super exciting going on since this is just the first part of his story. It basically him navigating high school while also discovering who he is and his powers. I am very intrigued to see how the rest unfolds. The book did a good job setting up things to come.
The artwork was amazing. It worked really well with the overall vibe of the book show more and I liked how shades of green were featured and incorporated.
Overall, this was a great start to Beast Boy’s story and I look forward to reading more of his adventures (especially with Raven)! show less

The first book in this series, Teen Titans: Raven, was borderline okay, but this one is a dull mess. I've never been a fan of Beast Boy since I first became aware of him during the 1980s when he was the pathetic comic relief in Marv Wolfman's Teen Titans. This update does nothing to make him less annoying or more interesting as he whines about being a scrawny loser and chases internet popularity.
The writing is uninspired, and since it is to be continued, a ton of plot lines are left unresolved. Very unsatisfying. I'm hopeful things will improve in the third book when Raven reappears, but the sneak preview included here is not promising.
