What I liked: The beginning pulled me in quickly. Who is this man walking out of the past and into this successful lady’s office? There was such unusual humor. Ashnapped? Did I hear that correctly? A bit of reflection and asking myself what have I forgiven.
What didn’t appeal to me: Without giving spoilers, I found John’s desire to be at peace a bit narcissistic. Coming to “visit then steal Katy” and a list of selfish, harsh, narcissistic actions over six years accumulating to that loss? I did not view this a story of strength and compassion. Carol failing to heal for 20 years that’s ongoing loss after loss for a woman that hardly has a support system but wait John has one more thing for Carol to endure besides his guilt. Bleak.

Solid 4.5 star
Be ready to be immersed into Carol's world and feel what she does as she goes from having her past well and truly in the past to in her face. They way the past slowly unrolls so we see everything she and John went through was great and a bit of a slow burn which really suited this story and hooked you even more. Another fantastic book by the author who always brings you people you can relate to and connect with.

A truly emotional story about love, loss and forgiveness. Carol Denman divorced her husband over twenty years ago and has never looked back. But on the day before their daughter's thirtieth birthday, John barges back into Carol's life with a request that threatens the fragile stability she has built.
Great book. Keeps your interest throughout the entire book. Definitely a sad book of loss. Also a book about love and forgiveness. Tells about a divorced couple and the man is dying but wants to set things right between himself and his x wife before he dies. Definitely has you reflecting on your own life also. Will be reading more by this author.
I knew how the novel would end, but loved the journey. Such a complicated character in Carol/Caroline. Very satisfying read.
After Carol's husband dies her ex husband comes back into her life wanting to take the ashes of their deceased daughter and place them in all the places she had wanted to go. Also he has cancer and is dying. Quite a sad story that makes you reflect on life and loss, forgiveness and strength of the human mind.
Expected more from this book. Picked as an 11th anniversary read but fell short. Boring and dragged in with repetitive content. No earth-shattering revelations or connections as far as grief is concerned. Finished it hoping there would be. Will not read the other books in her series. Best take away was don’t drink alcohol.
