In April 1966, Henry C. Taylor made a pilgrimage to the farm in southeastern Iowa where he had been born and had served his apprenticeship in farming. The far, located in Cedar Township of Van Buren County is called Tarpleywick in the book in honor of Taylor's father, Tarpley Early Taylor, and the ancestor for whom he was named. The story of Tarpleywick begins at the time of the early settlement of Iowa and carries through to the present. It tells how Tarpley Early Taylor assembled a show more five-hundred acre farm between 1860 and 1880, and the subsequent changes in farming methods and market availability as the railroads spread. show lessTags

1975 Tarpleywick: A Century of Iowa Farming, by Henry C. Taylor (read 24 Jan 1986) This is a little book written by a man born in 1873 in Van Buren County and published in 1970. It tells of how the farm operated while the author grew up, till 1896. It is simplistic narrative but I found it moving and interesting. The farm deteriorated after the author's father died in 1904, but now--1970--is out of the family but well-run. Well worth reading
