Description

All families have stories. For many families with immigrant roots, those stories are of the "old country" and times good and bad along other shores. For a particular Finnish immigrant family living in northern Minnesota, these stories focused on a fabulous Sami family called Hölömöläiset, who faced great difficulties and privations but solved them all in fantastic ways - escaped freezing at night by charming wild animals to come and sleep with them; caught their winter food by tempting show more fish to leap into their wagon; built a cabin with four huge logs. Yet within these amusing adventures were kernels of understanding that helped the immigrant family deal with their own difficult times - how can one be afraid of wolves when wolves helped keep the Hölömöläiset warm? Around the wonderful Hölömöläiset stories is the story of a young girl's family in northern Minnesota. They, took faced hardships and learned to conquer them, not with incredible luck or super-human feats, but with courage and patience and understanding. - Back cover. show less
