Beginning with what may be Luther's earliest extant sermon and ending with the last he delivered before his death, this collection of sermons can give the reader a glimpse into the Reformer's development as a preacher. The forty-three sermons in this volume represent but a fragment of Luther's total output. Volumes 51 and 52 of Sermons I contain some of Martin Luther’s sermons. The first “volume contains a selection of 43 sermons arranged in chronological order. Beginning with what may be Luther’s earliest extant sermon and ending with the last he delivered before his death, this collection of sermons can give the reader a glimpse into the Reformer’s development as a preacher. The 43 sermons in this volume represent but a fragment of Luther’s total output. Even the two thousand sermons or more contained in the Weimar Edition of Luther’s writings do not include all of Luther’s sermons.” Sermons II, known as the Postil, was written between 1521 and 1522 during his exile on the Wartburg. He “Intended to provide homiletical show more materials to be used by ministers in the exposition of the gospel, it does not contain actual sermons preached by Luther, but sermon guides, homilies written by him for the use of other preachers..” show less
