As year succeeds year, she has become all too aware of just how far her friends' achievements outstrip hers: Candida has married extremely well and now runs a minor stately home as well as a successful business; civil servant Jane has a high-flying career in government circles, while much-divorced Vanessa is a solicitor with a smart flat in town. Even Mary, a farmer's wife, has exploited her assets and created a profitable home-business for herself. Polly's only achievements are her two daughters, one now at university and the other about to follow her. When she goes, what will be left for Polly but a dull teaching job and her failing marriage?
