A con artist finds out he has a daughter.
2/4 (Indifferent)
Predictable, without any original ideas. And the editing is too heavy-handed to let us enjoy any Nicolas Caging.

Matchstick Men represents an anodyne change of pace for Ridley Scott. For a director known for doing films that are both large thematically and in scope, it's kinda anodyne to see him tackle a film that has a simple kinda-sitcom premise. It has touches of dark comedy and pieces of crime thriller, plenty of drama without losing all of its quirkiness. It often plays out like a character study of a man who struggles to balance his dirty deeds with his mental issues. All of this delivered in a flowing and non-vibrant way, unlike the majority of Scott's work.

Although Matchstick Men lacks the emotional depth of Motherless Brooklyn (Jonathan Lethem's 1999 tale of a hood with Tourette's), Ray's deteriorating grip on reality and the complications that follow prove just right for a quick read or a light movie.
