Description

From men in bowler hats, floating in the sky, to a painting of a pipe above the caption "this is not a pipe", Rene Magritte created an echo-chamber of object and image, name and thing, reality and representation. Like other Surrealist works, Magritte's paintings combine a precise, mimetic technique with abnormal, alienating configurations which defy the laws of scale, logic, and science: A comb the height of a wardrobe, rocks that float in the sky, clouds that drift through an open door. The show more result is a direct yet disorientating realm, often witty, often unsettling, and always prompting us to look beyond the visible, to what is hidden by what we see. This introductory book explores Magritte's vast repertoire of visual humour, paradox, and surprise which to this day makes us look and look again, not only at the painting, but at our sense of self and the world. show less

While Marcel Parquet's text is nothing particularly interesting, this volume from Taschen's Basic Art Series continues the tradition of high-quality reproductions of great art in a very affordable paperback book. No great read, but Magritte's images alone make for a worthwhile journey.
Indeholder "Growing up in the Black Country", "The Enigma of Poetry", "The Body in Painting", "Images and Words", "Thought Rendered Visible", "René Magritte 1898-1967: Chronology", "List of Plates".

Smukt reproducerede billeder af nogle af Magritte's værker. Her i oktober 2023 er der en smuk udstilling om surrealistisk kunst på Aros kunstmuseum: A Surreal Shock med billeder af blandt andet Magritte og Dali. Fx billedet af et par støvler formet som fødder, show more "The Red Model" og "Not To Be Reproduced (Portrait of Edward James)", begge fra 1937. show less
