Description

Two generations slain... but are there more to come?

Spring, 1321. As Sir Baldwin Furnshill prepares for his wedding, he receives the news that one of his guests, Roger, Squire of Throwleigh has just died. The new master of Throwleigh is little Herbert, five years old and isolated by his grief, as his mother Katherine unfairly blames him for her husband's death.

At Lady Katherine's visible rejection of her son, Baldwin feels deeply disturbed about the new heir's apparent lack of protection. show more For having inherited a large estate and so much wealth, the five-year-old will doubtless have made some dangerous enemies...

When Herbert is fatally hit by a horse and cart just a few days later, seemingly by accident, Baldwin and his friend Simon Puttock suspect foul play. Their investigation will lead them to the most sinister and shocking murderer they have encountered yet.

A taut and chilling historical crime novel, perfect for fans of S. J. Parris, Susanna Gregory and S. G. MacLean.

A few days after Squire Roger of Throwleigh dies his five year old son and heir also dies. Was he run over by a horse and cart in a traffic accident or was there a more sinister cause?

The usual twisty fun with a solution I didn't see coming. The author's afterword sounds as if he'd been receiving complaints about how authentic or not his linguistic choices are. I have no complaints on that score, but there are a lot of typos.
I have virtually all of Jecks' works. I am new to Library Things so am not going to go into great detail except to say that he has given me many hours of reading pleasure and largley give him 5 stars. Although it has been some years since I found one of the later stories, I was, at the time, prompted to find the first in the series, etc. It is grand that both his former publisher and his new publisher (Simon & Schuster UK) are republishing his books in print and other formats. I have given Jecks 5 star reviews over the years since I stumbled on to him. As to his research, historically it is from primary sources wherein he writes plausible tales into the historical setting.
when a 5 yr. old heir is killed there are many suspects, but none suspect his childhood playmates
