The River Congo The discovery, exploration and exploitation of the world's most dramatic river, by Peter Forbath (read 3 Nov 2013) This book tells in good detail of the events involved with the Congo River from the 1400s, when Portugal had a presence there, to 1977, the year the book was published. It tells the fascinating story of the exploration in sub-Saharan Africa, including the very dramatic explorations of Doctor Livingstone and Henry Stanley. It also sketches the role of Leopold II of Belgium and the evil he perpetrated when he succeeded in obtaining control of the Congo. I found this book often absorbing, though it has no footnotes. no reviews | add a review
