Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:Fan-favorite heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces on a deadly maritime case in the remarkable new novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford.
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver . . . a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.
They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf. When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport. And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers.

Listened to this during one of our trips, Davenport brings Flowers down to Florida to try and catch some drug dealers, Flowers does a lot of very deep diving.

Ocean Prey is another action-packed thriller that features the ever-popular Virgil Flowers, who teams up with the U.S. Marshalls to battle mafia drug dealers. When a drug deal goes wrong, and three members of the Florida Coast Guard are murdered, Lucas Davenport can't let it go. After calling on his usual friends—Bob, Rae, and Virgil—Lucas sets up a complicated sting operation with the FBI. The result is chaos and dead bodies. In the end, the bad guys go down. Lucas survives with minimal injuries this time, but Mr. Sandford does kill off one of my favorite characters, which I will dearly miss (no spoilers). Who knew Virgil was a master diver? ( )

Always a pleasure to read a new Virgil Flowers/Lucas Davenport book, especially with them together. ( )

I do have to say this one was definitely worth reading. Although I found the first chapter a little boring I could not put this down. It's amazing what drug dealers will do to keep their merchandise safe and away from the authorities. I was sad when Bob was killed, glad Lucas was ok. Shame the way they were set up. And then you add Virgil and Rae to the mix, what an awesome pair they made! I sure hope the next book is as good. ( )

Ocean Prey is a story that is neither good nor bad. It is consistent. The best part of the book is the end when the author discusses mistakes he made in various other books because his personality comes through. This book puts Virgil Flowers in the ocean, as a diver. Although Virgil is a State Marshall, who does not look like a lawman, scuba diving and being a stoner just does not work. Only three stars were awarded in this book because John Sandford can and has done a whole lot better in his suspenseful novels. ( )
