The Last Queen: Elizabeth II's Seventy Year Battle to Save the House of Windsor

by Clive Irving

Description

A timely and revelatory new biography of Queen Elizabeth (and her family) exploring how the Windsors have evolved and thrived, as the modern world has changed around them, and probing the question of the British monarchy's longevity. In 2021, the Queen Elizabeth II finally appears to be at ease in the modern world, helped by the new generation of Windsors. But through Irving's unique insight there emerges a more fragile institution, whose extraordinarily dutiful matriarch has managed to show more persevere with dignity, yet in doing so made a Faustian pact with the media. This is not a conventional biography--and the book is therefore not limited by the traditions of that genre. Instead, it follows Elizabeth and her family's struggle to survive in the face of unprecedented changes in our attitudes towards the royal family, with the critical eye of an investigative reporter who is present and involved on a highly personal level. show less

What a disappointment. I have been looking for a biography of Queen Elizabeth II to read in honor of her platinum Jubilee and when I started this book, I thought I had found it, however, as it progressed I realized that the author was more interested in showing off his connections to the Royal Family than tell the story of her life.

There were frequent personal notes and comments, political remarks, attacks toward members of the Royal Family, and frequently it went off topic to whine on and on about the monarchy but not the monarch.

I felt mislead by the title of this book. I thought it was a book about Queen Elizabeth and the monarchy but it turned out to be more a book about the author and his various employments. Disappointing
