I feel like this book could maybe be really great for a younger queer person. For me, it was just fine. I didn't love the writing style and was often frustrated with both the main characters. It was kind of a sweet story, but I wasn't entirely rooting for them and honestly didn't really get why they liked each other. It was kind of love at first sight for both of them and... why? Just because they're both hot? They said they liked each other so many times, but I never really felt it. Maybe other people would find their relationship more compelling, but both of them had kind of abrasive personalities. I didn't hate them, but didn't especially like either of them. They definitely act like teenagers... which makes sense. I might be getting show more too old for this type of YA novel.
I did think both of their individual stories were more compelling, but there was just a bit too much about society and not enough about their actual relationship. There's a lot of discussion about coming out in a homophobic society. I liked how it emphasized activism and pride, but was also understanding about how it's not always safe for everybody to come out. I think a queer teen could definitely get something from this it just felt very... surface level maybe? It wasn't bad or anything, it was just *very* YA. It's like exactly what you would imagine a sapphic YA contemporary romance would be. I think there are better ones out there, but this was fine. show less

Ruby loves auto mechanics but her mother, a former beauty pageant contestant, wants her daughter to have when she never had--the Miss America title, even that that possibility is remote. A closeted bisexual, however, is not pageant winner material.
Morgan is an out lesbian who is suing her former Catholic private school for homophobia, not allowing a lesbian to be on the track team.
Ruby and Morgan meet when Ruby almost runs her over in the school parking lot. While there is an instant attraction, Ruby won't admit it and Morgan won't get involved with someone who puts her back in the closet...or will she?
Very enjoyable. You'll like Ruby and Morgan and the ancillary characters.

This is my favourite read of this year.
Two female gay protagonists trying to figure out how to be themselves but had some obstacles. These two were famous teenagers. Morgan was the star track racer of her Catholic School and Ruby was a teenage pageant queen. I sometimes didn't agree with their opinions. I did root for them but oftentimes thought that are they meant for each other.
I LOVED Morgan. LOVED how unapologetically she was herself. Appreciated how supportive her family was. But on the other hand, Ruby was struggling and was torn between pursuing her automotive designing course and her mum's dream which was not even hers.
Ruby kind of looked miserable when she was not ready to embrace herself, but at the end of the story she show more accepted herself the way she is.
The way of writing was easy and I could comprehend easily.
Overall, loved it! show less

This is such a gorgeous cover but the love story just wasn't for me.
I loved the star-crossed love type story. The track star and the beauty queen. I liked Morgan trying to find her way at a new school and I loved how Ruby loved working on the car. I also thought the outside pressure to live up to religious and parental expectation was realistic as well
But I just struggled to root for these two. The games, the hurting each other - ugh, I was so frustrated that I just couldn't hope for a good ending. I wish I'd loved it. If you are someone that digs this kind of story and romance stories in general, you will probably love this one! It just wans't for me.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. show more This does not affect my opinion regarding the book. show less

2.5 Stars which I will generously round up to 3
A cute LGBTQIA YA romance about being true to yourself and not letting fear or other people's expectations prevent you from fulfilling your dreams. Nothing particularly stood out as unique or really interesting but it was a nice easy read. It lightly tackled some important issues such as abuse, homomisia and discrimination but the main storyline was about Ruby and Morgan's relationship.
CW: Homomisia, discrimination, sexual content

Reading this made me realize what a very easy time I had growing up. Reading a good book is like getting a chance to live another persons life and this book gives you the chance to do that times two.
3.5/5
At first I was so hyped by this book. Their first interaction together was just wow (I liked all “the casually “ plot). But it was so repetitive after, like nothing happens in the entire book .The end was nice . Their communication sucks and Ruby was so superficial . The books was just ok.
