Colette avait eu l’idée de ce roman dès août 1922. Difficile à écrire, comme elle le confie à Marguerite Moreno, il avait pour titre provisoire Le Double. Achevé le 31 décembre 1928, La Seconde paraît avec quelques coupures, du 1er janvier au 1er mars 1929, sous forme de feuilleton dans Les Annales, la revue que dirige Pierre Brisson. Le roman est publié en mars 1929 chez Ferenczi, et parallèlement, chez Grasset. Colette travaillera à une adaptation théâtrale avec Léopold Marchand, mais la pièce ne sera créée qu’en 1951 au théâtre de la Madeleine, avec Maria Casarès dans le rôle de Fanny.
