Description

James's subtle mastery of the art of fiction is nowhere more evident than in ""The Beast in the Jungle,"" regarded by many as his greatest achievement in short fiction, a gripping portrait of a man alienated from life and love. The author's uncanny ability to communicate the inner lives of his characters is also richly evident in ""The Jolly Corner"" and ""The Altar of the Dead,"" two superbly crafted tales that explore the complex interlacings of loss, love and the ever-present past in the

This is a strange story. The protagonist is kind of a pompous fool. It seemed absurd that his friend would follow him but the story really improved as it moved along and finished with a great ending.
It makes me want to read more of his short stories.
Always interesting to read James, but I don't think these are his best work. [Turn of the Screw] is far better. Although I do admire these stories for his ability to write about a love so subtle that perhaps it is only routine.
I'm afraid these three short stories/novellas will go for me in the Henry James I have read and utterly failed to understand. I grasped something in each of them as they started and then utterly lost the thread of his point and ended up baffled. I know for some that is all of Henry James but I have enjoyed both novels and short stories.Just not these.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion.

Brilliant.
