Ship Shapes

A concept book that focuses on shapes that are found on ships and the ocean. The book asks students to identify basic shapes that are prevalent in abundance on each page. There really isn't a story, rather the text guides readers through various scenes and asks them to find the shapes.

The lack of a story makes this a bit lacking in forward progress, but it can be treated like a wordless book that allows children to create their own story using their imaginations. I found some of the pages to be overwhelming with the amount of shapes included. This text might be a good option to work with a child one on one or in a small group. With a larger group, it would be difficult for all the children to each all the small shapes.

The book is about identifying basic shapes. The reader will have an opportunity to ask students to identify basic shapes and also to count how many they see. This book could be a very interactive book about math.

This book about shapes illustrated by Siobhan Bell represents the shapes in a unique way with a patchwork of fabric collage. The shapes are basically woven into the artwork and at the beginning of the book there are pictures of the shapes that are represented in the book. There are short questions on each page asking the child about the shapes on the particular page.
