Wonderful dk Green Library binding
Het in 2007 bij Athenaeum-Polak & Van Gennep verschenen Alle verhalen van Edgar Allan Poe levert niet alleen wat de titel belooft – alle verhalen van Poe in de min of meer chronologische volgorde van hun oorspronkelijke verschijningsdatum – maar bevat tevens De Folio Club (de proloog van een in 1836 door Poe geplande, maar nooit gepubliceerde bundel met zijn oudste verhalen); het onvoltooide verhaal De vuurtoren (waaraan Poe werkte ten tijde van zijn dood); een zestal essays; de volledige roman Het verhaal van Arthur Gordon Pym uit Nantucket; en de zes afleveringen van het onvoltooide feuilleton Het journaal van Julius Rodman. Het boek is fraai vormgegeven en de vertaling van Paul Syrier leest prettig, maar erg slordig vind ik het show more ontbreken van zowel een inleiding, als een tekstverantwoording en een notenapparaat. Gelukkig biedt het internet hier uitkomst, bijvoorbeeld de uitstekende website van The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore. show less

Deze verzamelde werken, in 2007 uitgegeven door Athenaeum-Pollak & Van Gennep, bevatten alle korte verhalen van Poe, ruim zeventig in totaal. Dat niet ook Poe’s vele gedichten en essays zijn opgenomen, is logisch en niet meer dan bijzaak. Met alom bekende en terecht geprezen klassiekers als ‘De moorden in de rue Morgue’, ‘Een afdaling in de maëlström’, ‘De zwarte kat’ en ‘De show more ondergang van het Huis Usher’ kan het onmogelijk ontbreken aan kwaliteit. Maar ook met de net wat minder bekende verhalen als ‘De voortijdige begrafenis’, ‘De feiten in de zaak van de heer Valdemar’ en ‘U bent de man’ laat Poe zien dat angst inboezemen hem als een maatkostuum past. show less

Poe is op zijn best als hij de logica van de krankzinnigheid beschrijft. Hij had een groot gevoel voor de onaangename sensatie van het onbekende: angst. Dat is immers zijn belangrijkste kwaliteit: de beklemming die hij kan overbrengen. Want daardoor zijn z’n griezelverhalen stuk voor stuk klassiek geworden – en daarom bewonderde Hitchcock hem zo.

Edgar Allan Poe was een literaire reus. Veel schrijvers zijn door hem beïnvloed, en hij was de aartsvader van veel genres. Een man met een dubbele persoonlijkheid: rationalist én fantast. Een auteur, verslaafd aan drank en (mogelijk) aan opium, die uitblonk in gruwelgeschiedenissen. Alle verhalen van Poe zijn nu gebundeld. Daaruit blijkt dat niet overal skeletten zuchten en spookhuizen kreunen.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army and his first collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems, was published. In 1835, he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger. Over the next ten years, Poe would edit a number of literary journals including the show more Burton's Gentleman's Magazine and Graham's Magazine in Philadelphia and the Broadway Journal in New York City. It was during these years that he established himself as a poet, a short story writer, and an editor. His works include The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Mystery of Marie Roget, A Descent into the Maelstrom, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Raven.
