Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn't pick, a book she couldn't steal, or a bad decision she wouldn't make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie. Now, she's trying to distance herself from past mistakes, but going straight isn't easy. Bartending at a dive, she's still entirely too close to the corrupt underbelly of the Berkshires. Not to mention that her sister Posey is desperate for magic, and that her shadowless and possibly soulless boyfriend has been keeping secrets from her. When a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie descends back into a maelstrom of murder and lies. Determined to survive, she's up against a cast of doppelgñgers, mercurial billionaires, gloamists, and the people she loves best in the world - all trying to steal a secret that will allow them control of the shadow world and more.… (more)

This book just was meh. It really did not wow me and I tired to both phyiscally read it and also finisehd it on audibook. I felt like the book read super slow and the characters did not wow me. I just strugled to feel connected to them. I thought the world was cool and unique but the book while it should have been fast pace, was a super not compeling. I might check out book 2. But this book i stuggled with mostly because i did not like the main character that much. ( )

Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars. The book is a supernatural, thriller fantasy fiction.

The plot follows "Charlie Hall, who has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make."

Some characters possess the remarkable ability to manipulate their shadows, either through magic or by nourishing them through other means.

While character building is a vital component of any story, there are moments where it seems the book could benefit from more depth and development in this aspect. The use of dual timelines, although intriguing, adds to the unhurried pace, requiring patience from those seeking immediate thrills.

Aound 3/4 in, it does start to pick up. I just struggled to stay present with the book.

The Book of Night may not live up to the high expectations set by her previous works.

I still think she is a great author and will read her other works. My heart just wasn't in this one. ( )

Epigraph
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

--From "My Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson
Dedication
