Gail's at semi-loose ends, relationship-wise. Things have cooled off with Lonny since he moved back to the Sierra Nevada mountains, and she's not sure where her personal life is heading. For the present, she has a two-week packing trip planned. Heading up into the high country with quarter horses Plumber and Gunner all by her lonesome is a longtime dream and she's going to do it right. But a dead man (a suicide) at the trail head before she leaves bodes ill for her peace of mind. And when "accidents" start dogging her footsteps, Gail starts to worry that she won't make it back out of the mountains alive.

Best yet. Crum has found her stride, and the formulaic feel of the first few books is absent in this one. Gail is starting to remind me show more just a bit of Robert B. Parker's Spenser - in a good way. show less
