(Vocal Score). La fille du regiment, always one of Donizetti's most popular stage works, was first performed at the Theatre de l'Opera-Comique in Paris on 11 February 1840. Joan Sutherland is another one of those that sings for herself. I can picture her only too well - as well as Ira Siff's impression of her - jaw drawn back for acoustical effect. I have to forget all that to listen to this. It's hard.
