Description

A glance at what it means to be outside of the gender binary. An introduction to people who don't identify as their birth gender. What does being non-binary mean? For some people, the question and its answer may be new or a little confusing. It's okay to not know what it means! That's where all good conversations start. The journey to understanding starts with an open mind and an open heart.

There is an intro (and an "outro") for grown-ups; in between, Hunter talks directly to kids (and any other readers), in simple, direct, clear language, about what it means to be nonbinary; other terms (masculine, feminine) are denoted with asterisks and defined in footnotes. The text-only, spot color design keeps the focus on the message; there are no photos or illustrations.

"Gender is how you feel in your heart and mind, but it may not match what the doctor says when you are born."

"This may not make a lot of sense, but not understanding is a great place to start....It takes a lot of courage to mess up and keep trying!"

"Words are important..
They help us understand each other, right?"
