This is the start of a new series about the 2 Sisters Detective Agency. Rhonda Bird is a unique attorney who gets a surprise message that her father has died. This upends her entire life, she finds out that she has a 15-yr. old half-sister, Baby, and she is named the guardian. Additionally, Rhonda has to go from CO to Los Angeles to close her dad's office and tie up his affairs. While there, she finds out that several of Baby's high school classmates are potentially being targeted, but the truth is even more sinister.
I liked Rhonda and Baby (later in the book) but not the bloody and cold attitude of the Midnight Club. The utter disconnect from humanity and the reckless killing was sickening.
A good read. I like Rhonda Bird, the main character. She is smart and good-hearted, but way over her head when she suddenly becomes the guardian of a much younger sister ("Baby"!) she never knew she had. And then Rhonda and Baby become all entwined in their fathers' shady business dealings, as well as the weird activities of Ashton--a former "friend" of Baby's? There's a lot of action, some whacky (and scary) characters and unbelievable plot twists. And lots of murder. Couldn't put it down.
Fast pace crime fiction to lift me from a reading slump with strong female lead, sass sensibility. Wrangling out of danger from a cast of the good bad and ugly. The new wild west.
Tried to get into this, only made it about 45 minutes/8hours in and I just couldn't stop rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness of this. Other reviews are right, the parts with Rhonda, will remind you that she is 'fat' at least 5 times per chapter featuring her. The narrator in the audio version i was listening to (hachette audio) even sounded disinterested in this factoid. The other perspective from the kiler has the male narrator trying too hard to sound like a gruff BA and just comes off very cringey.
