Laurel Snow wouldn't call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, WA, hometown, she'll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there's Laurel's attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene—and into the wilderness...

A former soldier and a trained sniper, Huck's thirst for blood is rivaled only by his fierce pursuit of Laurel. He's been burned by love, wounded by the government, and betrayed before, and to say he has trust issues is the ultimate understatement. Plus, he might be closer to this killer than anybody knows...

Once in the heart of darkness with Huck, Laurel must negotiate her distracting desire for him, her complex rapport with Abigail—and her mission to find a serial killer among a growing list of suspects and a danger that's far too close to home. So close in fact, Laurel fears she will never find her way back to the woman she once was...

I love finding a new series to read. Laurel Snow is a brilliant FBI agent/profiler (although she doesn't like the identifier). When she is called to her hometown of Genesis Valley, WA to solve a series of murders, she finds out some interesting things about herself, namely a half-sister she never knew about, Dr. Abigail Caine. Additionally, Huck Rivers, a handsome fish and wildlife officer is partnered with her on the murder cases, and Laurel is very attracted to him.
Laurel's uncle is suspected in these murders, but Laurel doesn't believe it. However, she has to keep her personal feelings buried so she can do her job.
As Laurel discovers more about her own life, she comes into a dangerous situation with the killer.
Good start to a new show more romantic suspense series! show less
Say hello to Agent Laurel Snow. The first book in Zanetti's new series has her returning home to handle family business and putting some haunts to rest.

Zanetti starts strong - we're given a crash course in Laurel's intelligence, observation skills and some of her flaws. It was a rapid fire crash course, and edged a little too closely to exposition at times, but for the rest of the novel we get a whole lot backing up the claims.

This was tense, from the prologue where you know those teens were being dumb to the reveal about family secrets, there's a thrumming undercurrent that screamed DANGER.

This felt very much like Criminal Minds (at its best), aided by the fact Laurel is a certified genius, but doesn't QUITE grasp how to people. She show more does it better then some characters, but its not her first instinct. She analyzes, studies, tries to figure out the why of people before attempting to interact in any natural way.

The mystery is, well, thrilling and the action just the right amount of exciting and "what will happen next". I didn't realize going in this was an ongoing romantic suspense series, so I was concerned at times.

Huck didn't meet a bullet or knife he didn't want to get intimately acquainted with.

The excerpt at the end promises some interpersonal tension in addition to murder mystery tension and I can't wait.

A new series introducing Laurel Snow. I read this book in 1 day. It's an engrossing, intricate, slow burn thriller that grabs you and hold on and keeps you guessing.

Laurel is an FBI profiler with eidetic memory, heterochromia iridun, & a little lacking on people skills. She's sent home to investigate a discovery of dead bodies that were unearthed by an ATV accident. She's assigned to work with Captain Huck Rivers of the Fish & Game. A mysterious and abrupt man who makes no bones about working with a Fed. Setting up shop to start investigating, Laurel teams up and show more hires Kate as an assistant and coordinates with the local law and Huck. Trying to identify the bodies, gather background information, and interview witnesses has Laurel & Huck at their wits end connecting the victims. An enigmatic witness named Abigail begins a cat and mouse with Laurel in a battle of wits that Laurel is unsure of. The matching of their minds and education unsettles Laurel and she can't quite put her finger on why. Meanwhile there's something simmering between Laurel and Huck that needs to be explored all while Laurel is dealing with living at home with her mother where buried secrets lie and some family become suspects in the killings. Someone is pulling the strings as the body count starts to rise as Laurel and Huck try to flush out a serial killer who is also trying to flush out Laurel. Secrets from the past are revealed and a bombshell drops with devastating results. show less
FBI agent, Laurel Snow is headed back to her home base, when she gets a call from her mother telling her that her Uncle Carl is a suspect in a local serial killer case. Going back to her hometown of Genesis Valley isn't something Laurel planned on, but now she has no choice. With the help of local wildlife officer, Huck Rivers and his trained dog, they begin to develop suspects in the case as more bodies are found. While the escalating killer seems close to home, Laurel discovers secrets that have been kept from her for years. It appears that Laurel can't trust anyone, not even those closest to her.

You Can Run is the beginning of an intriguing series, introducing several characters and mysteries that will probably be explored at some show more point. Laurel is an interesting character that we learn about as most of the story is from her perspective, but Huck's POV is also sprinkled throughout the book also. Dr. Abigail Caine is an ambiguous character that is destined to challenge Laurel since it is clear from the start that she is going to be an important figure in this story and possibly ones to come. The episodes between Huck and Laurel just scratch the surface of their budding romance, and I look forward to reading about them in future books. Overall, You Can Run is a great opening chapter to this promising series. show less

You Can Run by Rebecca Zanetti
Laurel Snow #1

Great introduction to a new series! Couldn’t put it down!

What I liked:
* Laurel Snow: FBI Special Agent, genius, focused, has trouble with emotions, lacks people skills, effective, loves her family, professional, intriguing
* Huck Rivers: Fish & Wildlife Captain, dog handler, search and rescue leader, ex-military, aloof, quiet, loner, intriguing
* Aeneas: Karelian Bar Dog, Huck’s K-9 partner, great dog
* Kate: divorced, loving mother of three girls, temporary employee of Laurel’s when she sets up her onsite office, potential friend for Laurel
* Laurel’s family: her mother Deirdre has a horrific backstory as does her uncle Carl, then there is her other uncle and his wife there to support show more the others – liked them all and hope to see more of them in the future
* Walter Smudgen: on loan to Laurel from local FBI office – there is potential for him in the series
* Monty, Ena and a few others that hopefully will show up later
* The slow growth of the relationship between Laurel and Huck – definitely has potential if the two are willing to take a chance and communicate
* The location – sounds beautiful
* The serial murderer aspect and how the killer was found
* The questions that remain about Dr. Abigail Caine and her father Zeke Caine – do wonder how they will be resolved
* That there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what I was meant not to like…and there were more than a few people, groups and events to dislike
* That there are still threads that were not tied off completely even though the serial killer was dealt with…not a cliffhanger but there is more to learn
* Having to wait for the next book

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Zebra for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Well-plotted romantic suspense, but some motives felt muddied towards the end.
I’m in a minority here, but I guess a romantic thriller isn’t the genre for me.

Maybe it is because I have recently read a number of excellent books, but I had a difficult time with this one. I had to force myself to keep reading, hoping that it would improve.

I thought the writing a bit lightweight. If I am reading a mystery/thriller/police procedural, I enjoy the personal aspects of the characters, but like the mystery to be the main focus. I thought that the author tried too much to also make it a romance. There was too much attention to all the nuances of that. ..what one was wearing, how one felt, what strange feelings, what a woman looked liked. And do we really think that the character of Huck would be obsessed so much about show more women’s clothes or that they were wearing French perfume or matching jewelry? That with pages of lovemaking were all a bit much for me; I also thought the case was a bit over the top. And, what ethical FBI agent would work a case where a close relative might be a suspect? Sorry, but it just was not the book for me. show less
