Description

The curse of an ancient captain upon a small Welsh village...a haunted island off the coast of France...espionage and intrigue on the German frontier...an eerie apparition on the Yorkshire Moors--these are some of the settings employed by the reigning mistress of the modern supernatural tale. For many years Elizabeth Walter has explored the shadowy borderlands of the unearthly, and her stories of insidious specters and menacing malignancies are among the finest of our age. Included in this show more new collection are such chilling narratives as "The Concrete Captain," in which a solitary seafarer is besieged by an unconsecrated emissary from the realm of the dead. "The Sin-Eater" incorporates authentic folklore from the Welsh Border in a gripping tale of murder and retribution, while in "The Hare" a present-day witch practices her ancient art of transmogrification against a background of passion and betrayal. IN THE MIST concludes with "Davy Jones's Tale," a masterly exposition of the encounter between natural and supernatural on the storm-swept deck of a doomed sailing vessel. From the demon-cursed coasts of Cornwall to the enchanted woodlands of Germany, these superior stories by Elizabeth Walter embody a sensitivity for character and conjuration seldom encountered in spectral fiction and comprise withal a permanent contribution to the literature of the macabre.--from inside flap. show less

Well above average collection of M.R. James inspired ghost stories by British writer Walter. The ghosts are always malevolent and the guilty and innocent suffer equally. These ghosts are going to exact their bloody retribution on whoever happens to be around. Innocent curiosity usually is the culprit that leads our protagonists into their unfortunate encounters. Walter typically keeps the end well hidden until she's ready for you to know it, and these are delightfully surprising.

Most highly recommended.
